SYMBOLS IN FAHRENHEİT 451

In literary world, writers want to enhance their writing, so they use symbolism.Symbolism can give a literary work more richness and color and can make the meaning of the work deeper. Lots of novel contains symbolic expression and sometimes this symbols exceeds its limits. In this essay we will discuss about Fahrenheit 451’s symbols.

In Fahrenheit 451 reader see five important symbols. The first symbol is fire. Fire usually represents demolition and restart.In novel, firefighters use fire for destroying the books and anythings that give information to people. At the end of the novel, readers can see that Guy Montag who is one of the firefighter and head character is the novel saw group of people. That people warming around the fire. Then Montag understand that fire also serving good works besides burning books.

Another important symbols are the sieve and the sand. Montag has some memory about sieve and sand. He remembers he put the sand to sieve but the sands quickly fall through the sieve, so he cried about this when he was a child. Sand represents the truth which Montag’s search and sieve represents Montag’s effort to learn something in a short time. Namely, although it was a forbidden, Montag read Bible as quickly as possible and he tried to remember.

Nakedness and mechanical devices are the other important symbols. Nakedness represents reborn. Namely, by entering the river and wearing a another person’s clothes, Montag to say goodbye to his old personality. And mechanical devices represent destroying of nature via acting on the orders of the Authority. We can see that on the mechanical Hound. It is a fatal dog which made of robot. This dog can kill people, animal and anything just a one command from the owner.

As we can see from the passage that this symbols has hidden meanings apart from what we read. Some shallow minded people can’t understand their hidden meanings but deeply thoughtful people understand what actually writer says.
